Romanian car maker Dacia proposes the Government to modify the first car registration tax, which has outraged the European Commission, by reducing the tax according to the age of the acquired car or to turn it into an environment tax, general director of the company Francois Fourmont has said.

He added that Romania needed to comply with the European standards. The environment tax, in his opinion should be based upon several criteria including pollution level and the CO2 emissions.

He added that should the elimination of the first car registration tax take place, Dacia car sales would be halved and thousands of jobs would be lost.

Environment Ministry officials proposed last week that the first car registration tax money should be redirected towards the Environment fund.

Environment Minister Attila Korodi said that the money would be used to reduce the CO2 emissions through several projects.
