Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu met on Thursday a delegation of the Japanese car producer Mitsubishi, a company interested in a potential investment in Romania, the Government announced. Contacted by HotNews.ro, officials of M Car Trading - the local market importer of the Japanese cars - said that Mitsubishi is currently investigating the possibilities to invest in Romania.

Tariceanu invited the officials to analyze the possibility to open a production unit in Romania, given the experience the Japanese group has in the Romanian Market.

Renault is currently the only foreign car producer which builds cars on the local market, through its Dacia branch. Ford will become the second foreign player on the market, after it opens the production unit in Craiova, in spring 2009.

In 2007, Romania produced over 241,000 cars, 13% more than in 2006. Mitsubishi sold, through M Car Trading (part of the Tiriac Auto group), 3,646 units with Outlander and Colt as most successful models.
