Vodafone Romania was fined 6,000 RON in 2007 (some 1,750 euro) for sending unsolicited advertising messages to mobile phones, said Alina Savoiu, official in the Personal Data Processing Surveillance Authority. Answering to reporters, Savoiu said that this is the first company ever fined for mobile phones spam. Vodafone officials claim it was a system error and that no other cases were recorded.

Alina Savoiu says that, along with Vodafone, two other companies were fined for e-mail spamming: Elitech Mit - an e-commerce company, and Paradise Travel Agency, a tour operator. The total fines applied in 2007 reached 15,000 RON (4,000 euro).

Personal Data Processing Surveillance Authority conducted 280 investigations in 2007, 83% more than in 2006 and 12 times more than all investigations between 2002 and 2005.
