The government requested the EC permission to decrease by one third the value of the already tripled car tax, resulting a double level as compared to the initial set sum when the environmental tax was introduced in July 2008.
The proposal plans to replace the value of the tax and decrease it by 30%. The calculus of the tax remains the same but the coeficients change. Plus, the coeficient change would also trigger the increrase of the total payment for non euro cars or Euro 1 cars - in which case the value of the tax will increase just a bit, ministerial sources declared, quoted by Mediafax.
According to them, Euro 4 car owners will not be compelled to pay the tax in order to protect the car industry. The normative act that includes all these modifications was sent to the European Commission last week and it will be implemented through a governmental emergency ordinance if approved by the EU.
