BitDefender says it has found the solution to remove Downadup (Conclicker), which is seen as one of the most dangerous viruses ever, with over 15 million infected computers over the past half a year. The blame falls on a vulnerability of the Windows Server service used by Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 Beta.

The worm, once installed, disables certain services such as Windows Automatic Update, Windows Security Center, Windows Defender and Windows Error Reporting. Then it connects to a server and waits for additional commands, which would make it either collect information or download and install other malware. The virus attaches to some processes such as svchost.exe, explorer.exe and services.exe.
