A government's ordinance, ruling on contracts for consumers exceeds regulations recommended by European directives and in just six months caused a drop of 54 million euro in the banking system, Central Bank department director Nicolae Cinteza declared for HotNews. He explained that in March, banks in Romania were registering profits of about 100 million euro but in May the loss was 50 million euro.

The reason of this consistent is obviously the economic contraction that lead to the disappearance of many companies. 20 banks ended last year with total losses of over 1 billion while the profit of the winning banks exceeded 2 billion lei.

The number of employees in the banking system dropped by 3.724 over last year. The personnel in central headquarters decreased by 265 employees.
