Romania's Transport Ministry plans to make between 7,100 and 8,300 railway employees redundant in a measure which along others is aimed at cutting spending of railway companies of about 788 million RON in 2011, according to Romanian news agency Mediafax.

The number of employees of railway companies who face redundancy varies depending on the availability of social partners to give up some rights including bonuses. Some of these rights will be suspended for 2011.

More than half of layoffs will affect CFR Marfa company (between 3,400 and 4,600), while the rest will affect CFR Calatori and CFR SA.
