Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea lost Romania's first match at Hopman Cup against Spain (Group A), a tournament taking place in Australia. Cirstea lost two sets against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, score 4-6, 3-6. Romania needs Hanescu's victory against Robredo to even the Spanish and preserve the chances to get to the final.

Cirstea had a break occasion in the beginning of the match against Sanchez, but she failed to use the three balls to her advantage. The Spanish player remained focused, attacked at the right time, made a break at 3-3 and won the first set 6-4.

The second set started very well for Sorana's opponent, when Sanchez managed another break. Cirstea revived the hopes of Romanian supporters at 2-1 in her detriment, when she managed to get her first break. But effort was not good enough and the Spanish tennis player got a second break, winning the second set score 6-3, bringing Spain its first point from Group A.

In the second Spain vs. Romania match, Tommy Robredo meets Victor Hanescu.

During the first Group A confrontation at Hopman Cup, a mixed tour organised every year by ITF, Romania won against the competition's favourite, Australia, score 2-1.
