Social Democratic Party's (PSD) honorary president Ion Iliescu said after a party meeting on Monday that the PSD would announce a candidate for the seat of Bucharest mayor after the NATO Summit on April 4-6. Iliescu explained that the candidate to run in the local elections later this spring would be appointed by the Executive Committee of the PSD.

Moreover, he accused the press of having released false information. He excluded any pre-electoral alliance with the governing Liberals but said that there might be a post-electoral agreement between the two parties.

Current PSD leader Mircea Geoana announced last week that Marian Vanghelie, Bucharest District 5 mayor would run for Bucharest mayor on behalf of the PSD and that PSD member Sorin Oprescu would run as an independent. PSD leaders however disagree with Geoana as they wish to endorse Sorin Oprescu as the Party nominee for the seat of Bucharest mayor.
