Bucharest mayor Sorin Oprescu submitted his candidacy for presidential elections on Friday, the last day of candidate registrations and the first of the electoral campaign. He runs as an independent.

He said on submitting his candidacy that "independent people are the most numerous in this country. If you consider opinion polls, elections would no longer mean anything. I tell citizens that they do mean something and invite them to support me. I strongly believe it's time for change", he said.

He was the last candidate to register for the presidential race. Other candidates include incumbent President Traian Basescu, Liberal leader Crin Antonescu, New Generation Party leader Gigi Becali, Hungarian Democrat representative Kelemen Hunor, Greater Romania Party leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor and Social Democratic leader Traian Basescu.
