Hundreds of illegal immigrants travel within the European Union Schengen area especially after the border control relaxed late last year, British daily The Telegraph reads. The system facilitates free travel within the European Union member states but it proved to be also causing free illegal immigration, the paper claims.

The first state to face such problems was Austria. After the Schengen system was put into force right before Christmas, the number of immigrants doubled there. Mayor of Traiskirchen, a town hosting a refugee camp declared that while authorities have been celebrating the new system, they failed to take any preemptive measures against illegal immigration.

Germany was the second to announce that illegal travelers in the country have multiplied considerably.
