Two separatist regions in the former Soviet republic of Georgia announced shortly after Kosovo declared its independence on Sunday that they would demand Russia and the United Nations to recognize their independence, AFP reports.

The leader of the pro-Russia Abkhazia, quoted by Interfax, said the situation in Kosovo created a predecent and that his territory would follow the Balkan region's suit.

For his part, the leader of South Ossetia, also quoted by Interfax, said that what happened in Kosovo on Sunday had happened in Abkhazia and Ossetia 17 years ago.
