The leader of the main opposition party in Romania, Mircea Geoana of the Social Democrats (PSD), said on Sunday that the decision of Romania not to recognize the independence of the Kosovo province was wise. He said that the proclamation of independence in the Albanian-majority Serbian province created a precedent that might affect stability in the Balkans.

The Romanian decision was in line with the interests the country holds in the region, he said.

But Geoana said that the presence of Romanian observers and troops in the EU mission to Kosovo was not legally founded as long as it was approved only by the Supreme Defense Council (CSAT) of Romania without parliament consultations.
