Romania urges European officials and the European Commission to pressure Ukraine in order to determine it to stop working on the Bastroe Channel. According to the UNIAN agency, quoted by the electronic publication Glavred, Romania's stand was presented on Monday in a meeting of European Council of Ministers on environment issues.

Among others, quoted sources argue, Romania declared that Ukraine announced it on January 18 that it would widen the Bastroe channel in the very vicinity of the Danube Delta. Romania pointed that, according to the report of the international special commission, any deepening of the channel might have negative consequences for the Romanian Danube Delta, which is protected by UNESCO.

Moreover, Romanian officials declared that Ukraine broke several international and bilateral agreements by starting works on the Bastroe channel.
