Readers of newspapers and online news websites across the world were in shock on Monday as several images appeared with Italians sunbathing and eating on the beach in the near vicinity of the dead bodies of two Gypsy girls who had drowned. Italian news agency ANSA announced that the two girls drowned on the Torregaveta beach, West of Naples.

The two girls, aged 14 and 16, initially went to the beach to beg but then decided to take a bath in the sea. However, due to high waves and water currents, they drowned and lifeguards were unable to save them. Their corpses were retrieved on the beach and covered by towels until authorities arrived.
