EU's construction sector recorded an annual 5.1% contraction in April, 2009. Romania ranked second, with a 13.7% annual decrease, topped only by Slovenia, the European statistics office Eurostat announced on Wednesday. Eurostat investigated the data in 12 states. The results showed the construction sector increased in four countries and contracted in the remaining eight.

April 2009 saw the overall EU construction sector increasing by 0.7% against March, but dropping 5.1% against April 2008.

From the 12 analysed countries, Romania takes the second position in the top of the countries whose construction sector dropped against March 2009 (six countries): Romania lost 6.1%.

Romania stays on the same position when it comes to the annual contraction for the same sector in April in 2009 - it recorded a 13.7%, topped only by Slovenia. The annual comparison shows that eight out of 12 countries recorded a contraction in the construction sector against four, which saw an increase.
