Romania's Foreign minister Teodor Baconschi and his Singapore counterpart George Yeo met by chance in Vatican on Tuesday as they were waiting for meetings with Pope Benedict XVI, according to Channel News Asia. The Singapore official used the occasion to discuss the case of Romanian diplomat Silviu Ionescu, involved in a "hit-and-run" case in Singapore.

According to the Romanian Foreign Ministry, minister Baconschi assured his counterpart that Bucharest had the will to solve the case quickly, fairly and in compliance with the law.

Silviu Ionescu has been accused that he killed a Singapore resident and hurt three others in a car accident in December 2009. While holding diplomatic immunity, he left Singapore shortly after the accident.

Baconschi assured the Singapore official about the importance given by Romanian authorities to solving this case and that he understood the concern of Singapore people.
