15 detainees killed themselves this year in Italian prisons of which 4 were Romanian citizens. Justice minister Predoiu sent a letter to his Italian counterpart, declaring that Romania is worried by the cases registered in the last weeks. The most recent incident of the sort involved Romania Ilie Nita, aged 34 who was imprisoned in the Santa Maria Maggiore prison in Venice and who decided to end his life.

The man was accused of blackmailing his partner with 300 euro and declared he is innocent. Ciprian G, a 25 year old Romanian is another case. The young man took his life on February 8th in the Marassi prison in Genoa. Three days afterwards, in Torre del Gallo penitenciary, nearby Padua another 38 year old Romanian killed himself.

Another Romania took his life in Castrovillari penitenciary, in Calabria on February 14th. The 25 year old Romanian took his life with his shoe laces. In early February the number of Romanians in Italian prisons amounted to 3453, representing 14% of the foreigners and 5.10% of the total considering that overall there are 67,500 detainees.
