The European Commission launched on Thursday an infringment procedure against Romania on the agreement with Russia on airline services. Moreover, it sent an official request of information known as official notification letter. The Commission is worried that the new agreement might compromise the equal treatment of airline companies in the EU.

According to the EC, bilateral agreements on airline services signed by a EU member state and a third country need to acknowledge that the terms of the agreement apply to all airline companies in the EU. Member states have two months to answer an official notification letter. In the absence of a satisfactory reaction, the Commission will send a motivated reaction in which it will request Romania to modify the bilateral agreement.
