"I am seriously concerned about recent attacks on the independence of the Constitutional Court of Romania," said European Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding on Twitter on Tuesday. Her comments came as Romania's government has been pushing for changes at Constitutional Court level so that it allow new legislation that may help the governing alliance in its political struggles with President Traian Basescu.

"For me, a well functioning, independent judicial system is a pre-condition for mutual trust in the European area of Justice", Reding comments in another twit.

HotNews.ro had previously asked the Commission for a stand on the current struggles in Romania, but the answer was that these were internal issues which the European institution would not comment.

Also today, Joseph Daul, leader of the EPP in the European Parliament, said in a public statement that he would ask Commissioner Reding to check whether the institutional changes in Romania complied with European standards.
