Romanian President Klaus Iohannis named Mihai Fifor, who has served as Defense minister in Mihai Tudose's government until now, as interime prime minister on Tuesday. Iohannis said in a press statement that he would start consultations with parliamentary parties for the nomination of a prime minister starting Wednesday.

Iohannis said the political situation displeased him "deeply" and worried him, considering that one year after general elections in late 2016 two PSD-led governments have already failed.

Mihai Fifor's name has been circulated for the PM seat after Tudose, who has only run the government for seven months, announced his resignation on Monday evening. Tudose's decision came after the leadership of the governing Social Democratic Party, led by House speaker Liviu Dragnea, decided to withdraw its political support for the government. Tudose and Dragnea have been engaged in a power struggle within the party for months.

Initially, PSD planned to nominate Development minister and deputy PM Paul Stanescu for the position of interim prime minister, but Iohannis did not agree to the proposal, as political sources had told HotNews.ro.

Tudose came to the helm of government after his predecessor, Sorin Grindeanu, was forced out of the job by the same party that nominated him, as he and PSD leader Dragnea had become mired in political struggles.
