Mircea Rednic announced his resignation as coach of Bucharest-based football club Rapid, one of the most important football clubs in Romania, after his team lost before Steaua Bucharest because of a supporter injuring a referee during their match last week. Rednic had announced he would resign shortly after Rapid played against Steaua but he preferred to stay for another match before leaving the team.

Rapid technical director Nicolae Manea said that he did not know whether Rednic had another offer but he was sure he would soon receive one. Moreover, he added that Rednic was not responsible for the team's bad performance lately.

Rednic argued that he wanted to resign even before the match against Steaua but he wanted his team to defeat Steaua too badly to leave them before the game. Rapid club owner George Copos has not made any announcements related to the next coach he will hire.
