The new version of the used car tax discussed in a meeting of the Romanian government last week fully complies with European norms and regulations, EC Commissioner Laszlo Kovacs said, quoted by the Romanian public radio. The Commissioner believes that within a week European officials would accept the new version of the tax. Thus, the infringement procedure against Romania on the issue would be closed.

Kovacs argued that the new version is very intuitive and creative and is completely different from the other two versions previously submitted by Romanian officials. The government discussed about the new version of the used car acquisition tax on March 31 and it basically introduces a calculus of CO2 emissions.

Romania is currently in the second stage of the infringement procedure, after the European Commission ruled that the first car registration tax breaches EU norms and regulations. If the Commission will accept the last version of the car tax, the procedure will be closed.
