Romanian senators refused to forbid smoking in public places as they rejected on Tuesday a a governmental emergency ordinance which ruled that smoking should be banned in public places. Moreover, Senators overruled from the executive's proposed text an article imposing community service for students or pupils caught smoking in public areas.

Senators voted a supplementary report which eliminated from the ordinance an article stipulating that shops located at least 50 meters near hospitals or schools are not allowed to sell cigarettes.

The emergency ordinance aimed at modifying the law on preventing and counteracting the effects of tobacco consumption and rules that smoking should be banned in all closed public spaces. The executive's document was set up in compliance with EU norms and regulations.
