Romania would not call for sanctions to be applied on the Russian Federation because such sanctions would only freeze the current situation and provide new grounds of tensions, Romanian President Traian Basescu said on Monday prior to his departure for the European Council extraordinary meeting in Brussels.

But he said Romania would demand that a clear European perspective be offered on the Republic of Moldova by starting and speeding negotiations for an accord of association with the European Union.

President Basescu would call for the European Union to demand the Russian Federation to comply with the Istanbul accord on the withdrawal of military troops from the breakaway regions of Transdniester and South Ossetia.

Romania will distribute among EU and NATO member states a document comprising an analysis of the situation in the region and future perspectives as well as a set of solutions so that small and medium countries in the region feel secure and positive evolutions on the creation of energy supply alternatives remain valid.
