Romanian Victor Faur receives suspended sentence for illegally accessing NASA files

Romanian Victor Faur, accused of illegally accessing the information system of various important American institutions was sentenced to 1 year and 4 months with suspension. Plus, he will have to pay damages amounting to some 240,000 dollars, monitoring agency Rador informs. Victor Faur was accused that in November 2005 - September 2006 he accessed information files of NASA, US Navy and US Department of Energy without a legal right. 

Victor Faur will have to pay to NASA 214,200 dollars, to the US Department of Energy 15,032 dollars and to the US Navy some 8,856 dollars. Moreover, the Romanian state will receive 2,750 RON for judicial spending.

Faur's attorneys urged the jury to fine and morally condemn the young man since he declared that he accessed the files out of mere curiosity, based on the data took from another Romanian, known on the internet as the Devil. However, prosecutors failed to identify the other young man.

Nonetheless, Faur declared that he considers himself partially guilty because, through his deeds, he pointed out the vulnerabilities of the institutions' security systems. According to prosecutors, since the system was penetrated, American officials had to communicate with space shuttles manually and the electronic systems needed general repairs.
