Former Romanian Justice minister Monica Macovei was elected on Wednesday the European Woman in 2008 by a jury made up of European MEP and journalists, Romanian news agency NewsIn informs. The award will be offered by EP President Hans Gert Poettering.

Monica Macovei was designated Romania's European Woman representative on June 16, by a Jury made up of 25 representatives of the civil society and Romanian journalists. Her counter candidates included Anamaria Marinca, actress and Margareta Matache, a ethnic rights activist or Iulia Motoc, the youngest UN rapporteur.

EP President Hans Gert Poettering declared that he is proud of Monica Macovei and added that he appreciates her courage during the Justice ministry mandate in her fight against corruption. He added that he has never seen somebody fighting so eagerly against corruption.

Monica Macovei dedicated the prize to all those Europeans who believe in the rule of law and declared that she will never stop her fight for good governance, transparency and anti corruption.
