A Romanian was kidnapped on Wednesday morning from a petroleum ship that transported 4,000 tons of gas in Nigeria's continental waters, Reuters informs. Several armed men managed to kidnap the Romanian and severely damaged the ship.

The water pirates managed to escape with a rapid small boat. Three private sources declared that MT Meredith, the ship was attacked at Bonny Fairway Buoy in Nigeria, a route frequently used for petroleum boats.

The ship requested help after the boat was severely damaged, sources inform. The attack is the most recent in a series of piracy attacks in Nigeria.

Romania's Foreign ministry received the confirmation that the Romanian citizen was kidnapped in Nigeria and initiated the necessary diplomatic procedures to negotiate his freedom, a press release of the ministry informs.
