60% of Romania's doctors wish to practice abroad, a study referring to the medical profession in Romania concluded. The main sources of discontent among doctors are the lack of social recognition, the professional growth and the low income.

According to the study, the Romanian health care system confronts an important problem: the low number of doctors per 1,000 inhabitants. In Europe, Romania ranks among the last three countries, with 1.9 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants.

The distribution is also uneven among counties and cities. "If their desire to leave country ever becomes reality, it is hard to say how the Romanian health care system would survive", said the president of the Doctors' College, Vasile Astarastoaie.
