The Japanese government decided to eliminate visa requirements for Romanians, starting September 1, 2009, Romania's Foreign Affairs ministry announced. In September 2009 to December 2011 Romanian citizens with a valid passport can visit Japan without a visa for a maximum period of 90 days within a 6 months interval since their first entry.

The regime will not be applied to those citizens planning to work in Japan and these categories will need a visa before departure. Romania's Interior ministry will send to Tokyo an interior affairs attache on August 18.

Romania's Foreign Affairs ministry warns its citizens to strictly abide Japanese laws while visiting, especially those relating to the length of stay.
