Romania's Superior Council of Magistracy denied the General Prosecutor Codruta Kovesi a second mandate. The decision of the Magistracy is only consultative and President Basescu is due to take a final decision. Five magistrates voted against Kovesi and one voted for.

Justice minister declared that Romania needs a brave and decisive prosecutor, urging the Magistracy to decide in favor of Codruta Kovesi to sit for another mandate. Nonetheless, President Basescu declared earlier this month that Kovesi failed to monitor properly the way the file on the events of the Revolution in 1990.

Justice minister Catalin Predoiu signed on Wednesday a proposal to reinvest Kovesi as general prosecutor. According to the procedure, the proposal is made by the Justice minister with the approval of the Magistracy. The mandate of the general prosecutor is of three years and it can only be renewed one time.
