The Economist: Traian Basescu won a dirty game, despite all probabilities

President Basescu won a tight race, but an ugly one and now he needs to keep up with his promises, British weekly The Economist reads, in an article dedicated to elections in Romania. Even though Mircea Geoana seemed a safe bet with the money, the media support and the political aid.

For a few hours, on Sunday night, Mircea Geoana was portrayed as winner by exit polls and he clearly won the votes in the country. However, Basescu won the majority of votes in the diaspora and secured another mandate.

Basescu won over a dirty campaign. With an anti-corruption card, Basescu maintained his pressure over the political sphere, The Economist reads. His victory, despite hostile news, was impressive.
