The coldest night so far: -34 degrees in Covasna

Sunday to Monday night was the coldest night of the year in Romania so far. In Covasna (central) the thermometers recorded -34 degrees Celsius and -31.3 in Miercurea Ciuc (Harghita county). At 6 am, here were -29 degrees Celsius in Brasov (central), Sfantu Gheorghe (Covasna) and Miercurea Ciuc. There were -28 degrees in Botosani (N-E), -24 in Vaslui (east), -23 in Sibiu (central) and Bacau (N-E).

The mildest temperatures were recorded in Moldova Noua: -6 degrees Celsius, while in Harghita (central-north) the absolute lowest temperature of January read -38.4 degrees Celsius in 1985 (Miercurea Ciuc).

Today's forecast range from -18 degrees in North Moldova (north-east) to -2 or -1 in Campia de Vest (west). The sky will be changeable in south-west and clear in the rest of the country. The morning comes with fog and white frost.

In Bucharest it is extremely cold. The temperature read -17 degrees Celsius at 5 am. The highest temperature today will be -8 degrees, the sky will clear and there will be a weak wind blowing.

The freezing cold warnings are still on. Meteorologists issued an orange code for the night to come (25/26 January). Suceava (north-east), Botosani, Iasi (N-E), Neamt (east) and in Brasov (central), Harghita and Covasna counties will record extreme temperatures, below -26 degrees.

The yellow code issued on January 22 and updated on January 24 is still on. According to it, during January 24 to 27, in East, South and Central Romania the weather will have extremely low temperatures, especially during nights and mornings. The minimum lows during night time range between -25 and -15 degrees and remain negative throughout daytime.
