The European Commission warned Romania that it might launch the infringement procedure if the law that sees the salary cut of Central Bank employees is not modified, since it might breach the EU Treaty, Romanian news agency Mediafax informs.

EC sent an official address to Romania's Ambassador Mihnea Motoc, Romania's Representative to the EU reading that if the law that sees the salary cut of Central Bank employees is not modified, the EC will launch the infringement procedure against Romania for breaching the EU Treaty.

The EU Treaty reads that central banks need to remain financially independent and cannot finance the state from their resources. Moreover, the EU Executive showed that such a decision, to cut by 25% the salaries of Central Bank employees does not respect the agreements signed with several intenrational institutions.
