The deficit of the pensions fund is a problem that the government failed to answer to, even with the IMF and Fitch made positive appreciations, President Traian Basescu declared on Wednesday at the public radio, Radio Romania Actualitati. He underlined that the deficit will be 3.6 billion euro in 2011.

Here are his most important declarations:

  • irrespective of what I would say, the public report made by the IMF is favorable to the government
  • Fitch, the international financial evaluation company, had also positive appreciations
  • However, the government assumed difficult, unpopular measures
  • The government failed to offer a solution for the pensions deficit, which in 2011 will be 3.6 billion euro which blocks any development
  • Romania went on huge deficits even without building a km of highway
  • any citizen needs to pay a tax and the introduction of a unique tax on all revenues seems to be the solution, but we did not resolve the problem of pensions
  • I understand that pensions as law, but I say we should find a middle way to resolve this problem
