Ion Iliescu, former President and party leader and Marian Vanghelie opposed the idea to suspend Mircea Geoana from the party for six months but PSD leader Victor Ponta managed to impose his position after he threatened to resign, sources who attended the meeting declared for HotNews.ro.

As a result, Mircea Geoana was suspended for six months and he is not allowed to speak on behalf of the party after the conflict between him and PSD leader Victor Ponta, on the 2009 elections.

According to sources, 16 members voted for the suspension while 6 against and 1 abstained.

Those who voted against the suspension: Ion Iliescu, Marian Vanghelie, Ion Prioteasa, Ecaterina Andronescu, Ion Toma and Aura Vasile, delegated by Adrian Severin to represent him in the meeting. Rodica Nassar abstained.

For the suspension voted, among others: Victor Ponta, Liviu Dragnea, Marian Oprisan, Dan Nica, Constantin Nita, Robert Negoita, Nicolae Banicioiu, Gheorghe Nichita, Ioan Chelaru and Titus Corlatean.

Quoted sources said that Ion Iliescu did not agree with Ponta's decision to suspend Geoana and told Ponta this is a personal conflict that does not need to be mixed with the party. Sources declared that Ponta threatened to quit.
