The Senate validated on Wednesday, in a meeting, the list of prosecutors and judges elected to be part of the new Superior Council of Magistracy. The list was validated with 64 votes for and 60 against after several tense discussions between the governing coalition members and the opposition.

The focus on these elections was on candidates Lidia Barbulescu, Dan Lupascu and Dan Chiujdea who remain members of the Council despite allegations that they candidated for a new mandate even though the law forbids this.

The President sent an official address to the Senate urging a decision on this matter. Even though the three, Lidia Barbulescu, Dan Chiujdea and Dan Lupascu were previously members in the Council, they declared that the law that interdicts two mandates does not apply to them because it was passed after they occupied their positions and the law cannot be applied retroactively.
