Romanian businessman and media mogul Sorin Ovidiu Vantu arrived on Friday, around 12 PM at the Bucharest Court where a new term in the file in which he is indicted of favoring Romanian fugitive Nicolae Popa is judged.

UPDATEThe trial of the Romanian businessman Sorin Ovidiu Vantu was postponed for Monday, January 10, after seven hours of debate. During the debates, the judge explained how she discovered that the medical documents submitted by Vantu’s lawyers, attesting a heart disease, were signed by a gynecologist. The judge made a simple investigation on the Internet and discovered another aspect: gynecologist Peter Husslein does not even work at the Vienna clinic indicated by Vantu.Also on Friday, the audio tapes that include the talks businessman Vantu had with Romanian fugitive Nicolae Popa and with others were heard.

5:55 PM During debates the judge explained how she discovered that the medical documents submitted by Vantu’s lawyers, attesting a heart disease, were signed by a gynecologist. The judge made a simple investigation on the Internet and discovered another aspect: gynecologist Peter Husslein does not even work at the Vienna clinic indicated by Vantu. She added that as she entered the website of the Rudolfinerhaus clinic, indicated by the businessman, she discovered the Husslein is not the director of the clinic.

5:40 PM After four hours all tapes are heard. All requests of the lawyers are no considered: request to allow the businessman to leave the country for a clinic in Vienna and an official medical expertise of the businessman’s condition. At the previous trial term, the judge requested defense lawyers to present all original documents attesting Vantu’s medical problem. At the time the judge realized that his documents are signed by a gynecologist.

3:20 PM The IT specialist hired by the court explains to the judge that his schedule is over and leaves the courtroom. The hearing resumes but moves slower.

1:50 PMThe session is resumed and judges hear the CDs. Prosecutors sent 4 CDs with recordings of various conservations. Two short movies are presented from the surveillance. The video reveals that investigations taped Vantu’s house on Paris Street. Tens of recordings are heard. The judge decides not to listen to the tapes but only to officially record them and establish whether they are in accordance with what prosecutors say.

1:30PM Sorin Ovidiu Vantu left the courthouse, but the trial continues

1:20 PM The meeting resumed but for five minutes the trial is closed to the public so that the businessman can present his medical reasons for which he requests to leave the courthouse.

1:15 PM The judge ruled to audit the audio tapes but the businessman’s lawyers argued against it, on grounds that the law will be breached if the tapes will be heard in a public session.

One of the defense lawyers, Viorel Ros asked for the trial to be postponed so that the tapes be declassified since they contain secret information. However, the court decided that the tapes do not contain secret information and therefore can be heard in a public session.

Another one of Vantu’s lawyers declared that the businessman would like to leave the country because he does not feel well. However, judges did not take any decision on this matter.

13:10 PM The session was suspended for 10 minutes at the request of the defense.
