In Romania live about 1.5 million Roma, not just 500,000 as the results of the 2002 census revealed, President Traian Basescu declared on Thursday at Strasbourg who added that one of the problems of the Romanian authorities regarding the Roma is that those who managed to integrate refuse to admit their ethnic belonging.

One of the objectives of the government would be to convince these people that managed to become professors, engineers, politicians that there is no shame in admitting they are Roma, the President said. He declared that Romania will accelerate the integration calendar for the Roma community.

Therefore, the Agency to integrate Roma will be part of the Interior ministry so that it will allow local administrations to find solutions for the minority. Basescu said that a new strategy to integrate the Roma will be launched this year.
