Romania awarded in 2009, 9,400 citizenships almost double to 2008 Eurostat data reveal on Friday. 67% of those who became Romanians in 2009 were Moldovan citizens, Mediafax informs. Romania offered in 2009 9,400 citizenships, almost double than in 2008 when if offered 5,600 citizenships.

According to EU data, Romania offered 0.4 citizenships to 1,000 people below the EU average that is 1.6 citizenships to 1,000 people. Of the foreigners who received Romanian citizenship in 2009, 67.2% come from Moldova.

Data released by Eurostat also points the fact that 66% of the citizenships offered by Hungary went to Romanians in 2009.
