Romanian Environment minister Attila Korodi could not say on Monday whether a transport of waste from Italy to Romania, about which the media speculated over the weekend, has arrived in Romania. But he announced that his ministry would take action to prevent the neutralization of the Italian waste on Romanian territory.

Talk of such a transport emerged in Italian and Romanian media over the weekend, when it was reported that an illegal transfer of waste was planned to Romania.

The Romanian minister scheduled a meeting with Italy’s Ambassador to Bucharest Daniele Mancini for Thursday.

An Environment Ministry press release quotes Korodi as saying that “we cannot accept that Romania become the garbage can of other EU member states, no matter our good relations with them. Romania respects the European legislation and therefore expects a similar behavior from its partners”.
