The Romanian Environment Ministry announced this weekend the oil spill affecting the river Danube for the past week has been dealt with and the permanent alert was suspended. Romania used some 15.5 tons of bio-degradable spillsorb materials and 1.6 kilometers of floating barrages to stop the flow of oil, allegedly originating in Serbia.

According to various sources, the oil spill originated at a fissured pipeline in Prahovo, Serbia last Tuesday. The polluting surface reached a length of 50 km with a width of 60-300 meters within a couple of day.s

Serbia has rejected a Romania call for compensations following the event, arguing that the very source of the spill has yet to be officially determined.
