Trade unions bring Bucharest to a halt in blistering heat

Traffic in the Romanian capital was brought to a halt for several hours on Wednesday as some 15,000 trade union members from various sectors protested in downtown Bucharest to demand higher average and minimum salaries and pensions.

Pensioners, teachers, medical staff and others took part in the demonstrations, that lasted throughout the afternoon on temperatures of over 39 degrees Celsius – almost a historical record for the month of May in Romania.
