Three political groups have announced their nominees for the top position in the House of Deputies after ex-PM Adrian Nastase resigned as House speaker Thursday morning.

The governing alliance of Liberals and Democrats named Bogdan Olteanu as their candidate for the position, while the opposition Social-Democrats, whose representative Adrian Nastase has held the seat since the 2004 elections, nominated Valer Dorneanu, according to Antena 3 reports.

The Conservative Party, a partner in the governing alliance but who supported the opposition’s Nastase as House speaker in 2004, named deputy speaker Daniela Popa to fight for the top job in the lower chamber of the Romanian Parliament.
