Romania's public debt grew by 25.9% in the first eight months of the year, but dropped slightly in August as compared to the previous month, reaching 138.2 billion lei, according to Finance Ministry Data. That would amout to 27.7% of the GDP, which is estimated at 498.96 billion lei this year.

By the end of 2008, the public debt amounted to 109.75 billion lei, accounting for 21.78% of the GDP, while in July it stood at 138.83 billion lei.

Governmental public debt accounted for 92.95% of the todal public debt, up 1.37 points as compared to the end of 2008.
