The Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) unanimously decided on Thursday to support the candidacy of incumbent President Traian Basescu in presidential elections this autumn, party president and Romania prime minister Emil Boc said.

PDL arguments for supporting Traian Basescu:

  • Romania's EU entry under his office on January 1, 2007
  • The introduction of the uninominal vote following a referendum called by Basescu
  • Access to files of the former communist secret police, the Securitate, and the condemnation of communism
  • The introduction of the flat tax
  • Imposing a minimum social pension level of 350 lei
