Romania President Traian Basescu sent a message regarding the situation in Ucraine on Sunday, hailing the halt of violence and urging all political leaders in Ukraine to show calm, restraint, pragmatism and caution, maximum availability to dialog and flexibility.

He said in his message that ending the violence and putting and end to the excessive, forceful repression of Ukrainian citizens' protests were preconditions for the country to return to a climate of peace, needed for the launch of a major political process to stabilize the country.

He said that Romania, as a neighboring country and a member of the EU and NATO, supports the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, which must be guaranteed by the whole political spectrum in Ukraine and by the international community.

He said rebuilding the economy of Ukraine with the support of the international community was one of the short and average term goals, along with providing social and political stability in the country.

And Basescu said that full compliance with democratic values and fundamental rights have to be fully complied with in Ukraine in the upcoming period.
