The Freedom House „Nations in Transit” report draws the attention towards four areas in which Romania has made steps back in 2007, compared to 2006: Justice, national governance, independent media and civil society. In the report published on Tuesday by Freedom House, measuring the quality of the democracy, Romania involved since the past report, the major problems being recorded in the Justice independence and the way the Government fulfilled its goals.

In brief:

* The attempt the Parliament made in 2007 to dismiss president Traian Basescu made the analysts consider 2007 as an year of political instability

* The civil society suffers from lack of funds and is vulnerable in front of politics

* In 2007, the press continued its trend, becoming the property of a few magnates, while the editorial content is affected by defamation campaigns and blackmail.
