Former General Mihai Chitac sentenced in 2008 to 15 years of prison for the events at Timisoara, West Romania back in 1989 at the Romanian revolution passed away on Monday morning in his home in Bucharest. He was released from hospital after several weeks of hospitalization. Chitac was due to celebrate his 82nd birthday. The information was confirmed by the general's family, for the Romanian news agency Mediafax. Chitac will be burried on Wednesday, at the Ghencea Military cemetery.

On October 16, 2008 judges sentenced Chitac, together with Victor Stanculescu to 15 years of prison for murder in the events at Timisoara during the revolution, back in 1989. Chitac received the approval of the court to leave prison for four months, after he requested a cease of the punishment on medical reasons.
